Our First Stage 4 Lobster

Ruby is the first lobster reared solely in Whitby Lobster Hatchery to reach stage 4; Ruby is 6 weeks old. This is a huge step for the hatchery. We now aim to bring more and more lobsters to stage 4.

We have been successful in raising one juvenile lobster which has reached the fourth stage of the lobster life cycle, stage 4 is the start to the benthic and adult phase of the lobsters life.

With the development of our hatchery under way, more larvae will be able to reach later stages.

This will increase their overall survival rate; in the wild, only 0.005% of lobsters reach the benthic phase. While in the hatchery we can achieve around 20-50% survival.

Ruby is the first of many, we aim to release 100,000 juveniles each year!
